About

Who We Are

Midwood Designs traces its beginnings to 1996, when two recent immigrants named Konstantin Selivanov, from Uzhgorod, Ukraine, and Alexander Korolev, from Moscow, Russia, first met while working for the same general construction company in the Midwood and Borough Park neighborhoods of Brooklyn, NY.

Both men were already seasoned professionals in their own right; Konstantin worked at a manufacturing plant where he quickly rose to a senior position second only to the plant manager and Alexander was an accomplished craftsman and true master with his hands, having completed many challenging projects in his city. The two future business partners first connected over the similarities in their situations – Alexander immigrated with his wife and 4-year old daughter and Konstantin with his wife and 5-year old son – then quickly became friends in the course of sharing stories from home and discussing their plans for what they could achieve in America.

By this point, the men had worked extensively at all junctures of a modern construction site - from demolition to painting - and both found particular success in and appreciation for the wood flooring craft, recognizing both its practical and artistic sides. Entrepreneurial and ambitious, they soon decided to pool their resources to eventually buy a set of flooring nailers, one second-hand commercial flooring buffer, and the bare minimum of rollers, brushes, and all other accessories needed to complete their first independent flooring project – an installation and finishing job that required them to work nights and sleep in shifts while working tirelessly to meet their deadline – all after completing their regular daytime work responsibilities.

The successful completion of this first project was all the inspiration needed for them to start their own company – known at the time as Midwood Floors – and begin to pursue all available opportunities to complete independent projects and earn a solid, dependable reputation with which to grow their new enterprise.

For the next few years, the two-man company would go on to complete many dozens of flooring projects for clients all across the five boroughs, and even as far as New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. While many of these were often relatively small residential projects, the company never declined potential business and used the opportunities to learn as much as possible about the practical and aesthetic nuances of wood flooring that, while often overlooked, play a significant role in the quality and longevity of the flooring surface – details such as proper plank arrangement and grain direction, choice of installation method, type of sub-flooring, finish composition, and more.

This dedication and supreme attention to detail proved essential to the its adolescent years as its business continued to grow, mostly thanks to referrals from its growing list of highly satisfied clients. By 2000, they were able to open their first commercial location, a small storefront on McDonald Avenue in Brooklyn to act as a base of operations, purchase a transport vehicle and some additional equipment, and begin to consider the company’s long-term future prospects…(to be continued).
